New things, tangible and not: A gallery, a show, recent bedtime reading, and more.
I’m coming up for air following 6 weeks of mixed-media projects, design assignments for the FIFA World Cup, a brief travel jaunt, and working my way through a stack of nightstand reads. It feels right to share some of it today—mostly to make up for the lack of a proper Octet over the last month.
A few installments back, I shared a recently completed painting. I later submitted it to the open call Summer Show at Francis Gallery in Los Angeles—the space run by Cereal co-founder Rosa Park—and I’m honored to be included in the final curation. My painting is featured on the poster above; I look forward to seeing the work of my fellow participants and sharing the space with them.
The show runs July 22 through September 12 at 8323 Melrose Ave in Los Angeles.
I spent a couple of weeks rebuilding and expanding my “Editions” store — the online gallery space where one can buy my editioned photography. The site has grown to accommodate recent multiples, from Corita Kent-inspired scarves and posters to painted and collaged original works. All printed works are also available to order framed in a range of handmade, custom-cut styles, delivered nationwide. I’m proud of how the site turned out and I’ll continue to add to both the inventory and site architecture over the coming months. If you are in need of ecommerce or Shopify site design and development, do give me a shout; I’d love to help.
Newly added works on my site include a series of small ink and paint compositions on Japanese bamboo washi paper, combining photo-collaged ephemera and vintage media with small painted moments interwoven. View the complete series, Late Twentieth, here.
Here are some of the books I’ve read, or am midway through, from recent months:
Everything Is Now: The 1960s New York Avant-Garde―Primal Happenings, Underground Movies, Radical Pop by J. Hoberman | What Artists Wear by Charlie Porter | Japanese Layout Design by SendPoints | Spring Cannot Be Cancelled: David Hockney in Normandy by David Hockney and Martin Gayford | Interviews with Artists: 1966–2012 by Michael Peppiatt | Modzines (1970- 2010) by Masala Noir | Make It Ours: Crashing the Gates of Culture with Virgil Abloh by Robin Givhan | and… Love Magic Power Danger Bliss: Yoko Ono and the Avant-Garde Diaspora by Paul Morley. I made a Bookshop.org list for (most of) them, here.
And speaking of Yoko, I visited Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind at the Broad, and it’s sensational and not to be missed. I shared some photos, here.
On the turntable, Pete Kember kindly sent me an advance copy of A ? of WHEN, the new album by Panda Bear & Sonic Boom. It’s as wonderful as I’d expected and will be getting a lot of summer playtime. I’ve also been listening to Library Copy Do Not Remove by Discovery Zone, Issue #1 EP by MARGOT, Good Time by DAIISTAR | EXPO by Ulrika Spacek | and “Uh Huh” by Fenne Lily, from her forthcoming record.
Lastly, Andi and I just returned from Ojai, sent on assignment by a British outlet to cover, capture, and collect a snapshot of the beautiful little envclave just north of Los Angeles. More on that, soon, but in the meantime, here’s a teaser.
Until next time.
